Oxfam’s One-Year Commemoration of the Jogjakarta Earthquake

September 12, 2007 · No Comments

I waited three hours before finally getting a chance to rest my head on the outgoing Garuda flight to Jogjakarta.  When the pilot announced that the flight was ready to take off, I suddenly got my spirit back. I always enjoy the feeling at take off. At this moment, I free my mind and automatically shut my eyes.  But I couldn’t close my eyes during this trip.  I was too excited to see my dear friend and colleauge Ariani Soejoeti who I call Rina.  She works for Oxfam GB in Jogjakarta. She called me up at one day and asked me what to do to celebrate the one-year commemoration of the Jogjakarta earthquake. I advised her to get help from an event organiser.

“I was thinking of having a booth for Oxfam during the commemoration. However, you can’t organise this event alone, Rina, “ I told her.

“So what should I do?” she replied.

“Get an event organiser and asked them to make an exhibition stand for Oxfam Jogjakarta. You’re not thinking about trying to set up the booth alone, are you?” I asked.

“I’m confused,” she said.  “But, thanks anyway. I think you’re right. I should ask someone to help me with this.”

She called me up few times after that call. Then, eventually, she invited me to come and visit her for the commemoration of the Jogjakarta earthquake. I agreed.
